5 Ways to Embrace Dopamine Decor

There is a new home decor trend that is almost anti-trend - it’s called Dopamine Decor. The idea is to create rooms that make you feel happy! It could be adding color, whimsy, personality, or just being out-of-the-box creative. No matter what, though, the idea is to that your spaces should make you happy rather than follow some hard rules about interior design. Ready to lift your spirits? Try these five ideas to create those happy feelings in your home!

1. Go for a Happy Color

What is your favorite color? Which colors lift your spirits automatically? Those are the colors you should have in your home! Don’t be afraid to use a color that isn’t traditional for a particular room, too. If you like orange then nothing says you cannot have orange in the kitchen. Or you could try a bold sunny yellow, like I did in the laundry room of my Champions project above. It is definitely a cheerful space!

2. Add a Little Whimsy

Your home should show YOUR personality! With Dopamine Decor, the idea is carried even further. Rather than worrying about whether someone else will approve of what you use in your home, you should embrace whimsy and fun! Show who you are with art and mementos that really mean something to you. It’s such a joy to be surrounded by things that are witty or playful, so go for it!

3. Use What You Love

Always showcase the things that you love! It could be a gallery wall of your favorite family photos, or a collection of books you’ve picked up over the years, or even a surfboard to show how much you love to ride the waves. These are the things that make you who you are, that really set you apart. So use them in your decor so you can be surrounded by what you love!

4. Do something different

Think out of the box when it comes to home decor! Try anything unique to give your home a fabulous style. In my Champions project above, we tried the fabric art in several places. And suddenly I thought, “What about the ceiling??” It isn’t a spot where most people would think to hang art, but it looks incredible!

5. make a pattern

Use patterns to craft a fun look for your home! It could be a floral wallpaper, a bold stripe on a sofa, or a custom paint job. I created a geode pattern for the powder bath in my Cherry Hills project above. It is a dramatic look, but it’s also one that makes my clients happy! And that is the whole key to Dopamine Decor.
