One thing that most people don’t pay attention to in their homes is the lighting - unless it’s wrong for the room. Then it becomes a frustrating problem that you can’t ignore! I love to layer lights in every room, but there’s always that one light source that is critical for the room to function the way it should. Let’s take a look at the most important light for each room in your house!

The Kitchen

Kitchens need a lot of light from a lot of sources, but the most important lighting type is task lighting. Those would be fixtures - usually pendants - that hang directly over your usual workspace. As you can see above, I put gorgeously bright hanging fixtures right over the island in this kitchen. They direct light right onto whatever kitchen prep is underway.

The Living Room

Overhead light is so important in a larger space like a living room. But not one of those flush-mount single lights! Use a multi-bulb fixture like the one above to throw light from one end of the room to another. But remember to also put this light on a dimmer switch so you can adjust the brightness to suit your mood.

The Bedroom

A light beside the bed is the very most important light in a bedroom. It quiets the lighting in the space to prepare your brain for rest. And it gives you a terrific light source for reading or watching television from your bed. The idea in this room is to keep the light from being too bright, otherwise you won’t begin to wind down for your optimal sleep.

The Bathroom

Overhead light is terrible for a giving you a flattering look in a bathroom. It creates shadows on your face that really will give you a fright. I use sconces in this room, on either side of a mirror, to create directed light that’s much more flattering to you and your guests!

Remember - these aren’t the ONLY light sources you should have in each of these rooms. They’re just the most important ones! Let me know what you think in the comments section below!
