Rug Rules for Every Room
One thing that can really ruin the look of your gorgeous interiors is a too-small rug. It can look like a tiny island with furniture just clustered around it. Definitely a rookie mistake. Also using the wrong pile or material can cause functionality issues for you. Believe it or not, pros like me do have rules that we follow for rugs, and they depend on each room in the house. Here are my top rug rules for each space!
Living Room
In this room, it’s best to invest in the largest rug you can get. I’ll often use carpet and have it finished all the way around so I can get the exact dimensions I need in a large space. A good rule of thumb is to be sure that all the seating and tables have room to be placed on the rug. This is why I often go custom for living rooms and bedrooms - then I can get the perfect color and size for my clients.
Dining Room
You don’t want a very high-pile carpet in this room because that makes it difficult to push your chair back from the table as you stand. And you do want every chair to have the room to pull out or in without dropping off the rug. Remember, too, that rugs can also be art for the space, as you can see above. That rug ties together the entire pretty palette.
Bedroom
This is another room where people tend to skimp on the rug size - and you really shouldn’t! You want the rug to go completely under the bed with enough room on either side for the person to step out of bed and onto the rug. You can also use a deeper pile in this room because it creates a cozy feeling.
Bathroom
Wet floors are slick! So you definitely want a rug to step onto as you emerge from the shower or bath. But you don’t have to have an ugly bath mat. You can have an elegant rug in this room, too, as long as you ensure that it has a rubber lining added to the bottom to avoid slipping.
Hallway
If you have a long hallway, definitely consider a lovely runner. It also avoids slips on tile or wood surfaces. But use a low-pile so you don’t have people tripping over the ends.
Stairs
Stairs can be very dangerous if they’re left bare. I absolutely love to cover them with a runner, usually in a custom color like you see above. This is also the one place where you want to have that runner professionally installed so there is no chance of it coming loose or not being applied properly.
Outdoors
Remember to treat your outdoor spaces just like you do your indoor rooms! Outdoor rugs have come a LONG way and they create a luxe feeling for dining and entertaining spaces.
