How to Select the Right Window Treatments

Window treatments - curtains, drapes, shades, and more - are definitely both decorative and functional. It can be hard to decide which type of window coverings to use in a room, though, or even if you should leave the windows bare. I love to create beautiful interiors for my projects, with stunning window treatments. So here are my top pro tips for selecting the perfect ideas for each room’s windows.

1. Consider the Light

One of the first things to think about is how much light you want to let into a room. In a bedroom, I select heavier drapes that have a light blocking panel added. That keeps the room perfectly dark for optimum sleep! In a living room, you may want to choose beautiful sheers that will let in the light, but also allow for some privacy.

2. Make a Style Statement

What style is your room? That will help you decide what window treatments to select, too! In most cases, I like to use simpler drapes and curtains to complement the rest of the room’s decor. But that doesn’t mean I don’t also like to have a bit of fun with color and pattern. In the room above, the bold stripe in coral is a great accompaniment to the coral art and pillow.

3. Open and Shut Case

So how do you decide when to leave the windows bare? There are a few rules of thumb. If the windows themselves are standouts and gorgeous, there’s no reason to cover them up. The same is true if the view outside those windows is spectacular. But I also think about privacy before I leave windows bare. If there aren’t any concerns about who can see into the house, then you can definitely decide not to cover those windows.

4. Shade Factor

And don’t forget lovely shades! They are a fantastic choice for windows where curtains just aren’t an option. In kitchens, for example, there’s just no room for drapery over a sink. So a colorful shade still offers privacy when you need it, but can be rolled up to let the sun in. I also use shades on doors, in bathrooms, and on custom-sized windows.
