Bathrooms hold a lot of moisture, even with great ventilation. So I like to talk to my clients about using tile on the walls of the entire bathroom, not just in a shower space. Tile is so easy to clean and it works as the perfect barrier between all of the water sources and your wall boards. If you don’t want to tile everything, consider a tile backsplash behind the sink and tub. That will definitely help!

If you’re going through all the trouble of a major renovation, carefully plan every detail so you can have the bathroom of your dreams! Start with ALLLL the bells and whistles, especially those spa bath details. An investment in a steam shower or a deep soaking bath is definitely going to pay off in stress relief for you later! And they both have health benefits, too.

3. Built-In Vanity
It is so much more efficient (and more fun) to have a dedicated space to get ready in the morning. It just starts your day off right. I always design a built-in vanity space in the primary bathrooms I create. It helps keep things organized, and it’s a fabulously glam way to kick off your day.

4. Non-Slip Floors
Whether you have older people or young children using the bathroom that you’re renovating, it’s important to remember a non-slip floor. Look for rugs with non-slip backing, as well as textured tiles. They will definitely help avoid any accidents, and they look great, too.

5. Layered Lighting
Layered lighting means that you should have several light sources in a bathroom. So you’re going to want a bright overhead light, like canned lights. You should have lights on the sides of the mirror - not above it. That helps direct more flattering light onto your face. And then I like to add a statement light with a dimmer switch. You want bold and bright light when you’re getting ready in the morning, but you’ll need a softer light source when you want to relax in the tub.

A great bathroom design offers a lot of functionality. Think about everything that you need to store in this room and be sure you have cabinets and drawers made specifically for those items. That can include hair tools, toiletries, cleaning products, towels, and more. It will not only make your life easier, but it will keep your bathroom space organized and clean!
