The Doors of London
I’m in London for a very special project and I am in awe of the architecture and the homes here. It’s more than just the history, there’s so much personality and charm to these houses and flats. And of course I’m fascinated by the front doors. There is a mystery to what could be behind the doors, as well as a stunning design element. So I thought I’d take you on a little tour of some of my favorites! And if you’d like to see more of my walks and design finds in England, be sure to follow me on Instagram here!
So many of the homes I passed are, of course, technically flats or walkups that are part of larger buildings. That means that it would be impossible to paint the exteriors any color other than what the overall structure has on its walls. Most of what you see is historically white, and that means that to show personality and individuality, you have to concentrate on the front door, the walkway and the small bit of garden.
The option to also have double doors, rather than a single with panes of glass on either side, gives the home above a more formal and distinguished look. And I love the silver hardware against the deep navy.
The glass awning over the steps and entry of the home above is classically English Victorian, and I am in love!
The topiaries outside the home above perfectly complement the hunter green door. I’m also fascinated by the placement of the numbers for the address and the font that is used for each home.
The more modern peacock blue on this door is a pleasant surprise as you walk by. And look at that railing - I’m going to have to keep that in mind for a future project!
I saw so many bold mustard yellow doors, a color that perfectly complements the deep black of the wrought iron that you also see throughout London’s neighborhoods.
The home above literally stopped me in my tracks - that tile is incredible! It adds an amazing personality to what is a very small front garden.
The landscaping above is also exquisite. I love the moss between the bricks and stone, too.
And then occasionally you do see a home that goes bold with a distinctive exterior color, a dramatic red door, and fabulous tile. It’s the perfect mix.
Travel can be so inspiring - and now you see why. There are hundreds of ideas that I’ll be taking home with me. What caught your eye the most? Let me know in the comments section below!
Warmly,
Beth
