6 Ways to Select Art for Your Home

I love to work with my clients to find the perfect art for their interiors. Selecting the right art can be difficult, and too many people are intimidated by the process. So I have 6 no-fail ways to find art that you love and to display it in your own home. Let’s take a look!

1. Choose What You Love

The very most important thing about any art that you bring into your home is that it speaks to you. You want to collect art that means something and that you love. There really aren’t any “rules” to follow. You are the one who will live with this art and you want to be happy every time you look at it. So find what you love and buy it!

2. Color Your World

Art can complement the color in a room, or draw your eyes as the only color in the room, like in the home gym I designed above. I love to design around a piece of my client’s art. It can inspire the entire palette of a space or a home. Pay careful attention to the colors that are your favorites, or that set a mood that you want.

3. Mix Your Materials

It’s a bit boring to have a room full of drawings only, or a single painting and nothing else. Mix things up to create more interest and to show more of your personality. You can use pottery, sculpture, paintings, prints, and more! Even the surfboard in the coastal room I designed above is meant to be a piece of art that reflects the home’s setting and my client’s favorite hobby!

4. Invest What You Can

Art can be an investment - but remember my first tip. Don’t just buy something as an investment. You want to love it, too! Explore galleries in your area and support emerging artists. Invest in good original pieces - you never know how that investment will grow.

5. Create Layers

When displaying your art, be sure that you layer them. By that I mean you can place smaller items in front of larger ones, lean a small drawing against a large painting, put shells on the table in front of a sculpture. It greats depth and a lot of visual interest!

6. Remember Scale

You don’t want to put a small painting on a large wall - it will look completely out of place and lonely. And you also don’t want to hang a huge work of art over a small table. Scale is very important when you are trying to fill a specific place in your home. In the living room above, my client needed a tall painting to match the scale of this super-high ceiling.

Art is so important to giving your home personality and style. Use these tips to find the right pieces for your home!

Warmly,

Beth
