4 Ways to Add Texture to Your Rooms

Texture is one of the most important design elements in a home, but it doesn’t get the spotlight the way color or shape will. All of your senses are engaged in a successful interior, and that includes your sense of touch. That’s where texture comes in. So how do you add this all-important element to a room? I have 4 tips that will make it easy!

1. Make It Natural

Natural materials give you one of the best ways to introduce texture. Woven grasses, natural wood grains, cotton rope, and more provide amazingly tactile designs. And there's a bonus - natural materials give you that sense of bringing the outdoors in, which is good for your mind, body, and spirit.

2. Hang It Up

Don’t forget the walls when it comes to texture! In the bathroom I designed above, I used a grasscloth wallpaper with a fantastic nubby feeling. That gives the pattern a more dimensional look, too, which draws the eye in.

3. Talk About Tile

When you think about tile, do you automatically assume it’s a smooth texture? I’m here to change your mind! Concrete tiles are just one example of a selection that’s going to have an amazing feeling when you touch it. But you can also create texture by how you place the tile and what grout you use.

4. Soften Up

Fabrics on upholstery are famous for their “hand” or how they feel when you touch them. I love velvets, boucles, jacquards and so many other upholstery fabrics that just feel fantastic. But you can also add texture with cuddly throws and softer-than-a-cloud pillows.
