4 Pro Tips for Hanging Art
I love to curate and hang art in my clients’ homes. It isn’t as easy as just putting a nail in the wall, though. If the art is the wrong scale, or is hung incorrectly, it can ruin the look of the entire room! So here are my 4 pro tips to make your art stand out in any space.
1. Hang at Eye Level
The biggest mistake most people make when they hang art is they place it far too high on the wall. The ideal placement is to have the center of the art right at eye level. For most pieces, that will be about 57 inches from the floor to the center. Think about your favorite museums and galleries - the art is hung so you can enjoy it, rather than far up the wall.
2. Hang Multiples as One
When you have multiple pieces of art that are similar, consider them as one single piece as you place them. For example, in the room above I hung the art so the center of the middle photo is on the center of the wall. Then you can place the other pieces near it.
3. Measure from the Furniture
If you’re placing art above furniture, like a bed or sofa, you want the bottom of the frame to be 4 to 6 inches from the top of the headboard or the back of the sofa. That keeps it at a perfect height, while also avoiding people’s heads. Use the same guide for art above a credenza or table.
4. Consistent Spacing
When you are hanging multiples, also be sure to use the same spacing between each piece. There’s nothing worse that having one piece just a little bit off. Your eye will definitely notice it and it will drive you crazy!
Bonus idea: Try paper templates of your art to help you plan out the perfect gallery wall. Then you won’t have to move nails over and over.
Use these tips to hang your art like a pro and to give yourself magazine-worthy rooms!
Warmly,
