The Way We Live Now: Bathrooms

In just a few months, we’ve become more obsessed with germs and cleanliness in our homes than ever before. And of course the room that is the focus of that for many of us is the bathroom, where we’re all washing our hands over and over.

Powder rooms are getting a workout, and sinks now need to be easier to turn on and off with an elbow or wrist.

We also need to have an easy-to-use soap dispenser nearby, full of antibacterial soaps. And we need good acoustics for whatever 20-second song you choose to sing while you wash your hands. Kidding – but not.

I also like to keep a stack of hand towels nearby. It’s easy to wash and sanitize cloth towels and helps save the environment, so I prefer them to paper hand towels.

I’m designing with new innovations for my clients’ new powder rooms and bathrooms. High on the list are touchless sinks and toilets that flush with a wave of the hand. The space age one from Kohler below looks cool, too!

And easy-to-clean tile and marble backsplashes are going to become more popular to keep this room even more germ-free.
