The Art of Making the Bed

Sometimes the simplest things make all the difference, and that is definitely the case when it comes to making your bed. At the end of a long and stressful day, you want to find an oasis of comfort waiting for you, not a tired old mattress with haphazard pillows and coverings. There really is an art to making the bed - let’s take a look for my pro tips!

Crisp and Tailored

When selecting your bedding, remember that white is a classic choice. In fact, it’s now ingrained in our minds as meaning clean, crisp, and comforting, so it’s the perfect choice for sheets. This is always my ideal for duvets, too, unless you like to have your dogs on the bed with you! For your sheet selection, it’s up to your personal taste as to whether you go with cotton, percale, bamboo, or any other construction. No matter what you choose, select the highest-quality that you can afford. You’ll thank me later!

Pillow Talk

How many pillows should you have on your bed? I always encourage my clients to think about how they’ll use the pillows and steer away from using items that are only decorative. You want at least 2 pillow per person (with one in a sham) to offer support when you read or watch TV in bed. Bolsters and kidney pillows are also great for propping you up and making you comfortable. But putting lots of small pillows on the bed for no functional reason just is not a good idea.

Those Little Extras

Once you have the basics of sheets, comforter, and pillows all sorted, it’s time to think of anything else that will make your bed comfortable and inviting. I love to add extra blankets or a throw at the end of the bed to help adjust the warmth through the night. And a bed skirt makes the overall look much more elegant and cohesive. Unless you have an upholstered bed base, most bed frames are not attractive, so this adds a layer of polish.
