My Favorite Things: Displaying Art

It’s my last post in my series of favorite things, and we’re going to talk about one of my all-time favorite design elements - art! I love curating art for my clients, either using their existing collections or helping them find new pieces that are perfect for their homes. There are so many ways to display art in the home, to showcase the paintings and sculptures in the best way possible. Here are a few of my faves:

Focal Point

Large-scale paintings are great for drawing the eye in a room. They can also inspire the color palette and define the mood of the space. I love the painting above because it’s calm and peaceful, the perfect mood for a breakfast area. And it catches the light gorgeously. In the workout room below, the painting is vibrant and compelling - an exciting sizzle to keep the mood upbeat and energetic!

Supporting Role

I love to display art in a quieter way, too. In the room below, the painting blends with the neutral palette and offers a great way to fill the space between two doors.

Layered Look

Layering several pieces of art on a table or mantel gives them dimension and so much interest. I like to group things that have a similar palette, but it’s even better if they are all made from different materials. So below we have a fabulous painting, a paper sculpture, a glass sculpture, and an organic piece of coral. It gives the eye a lot to look at, but it’s still completely cohesive.

Niche It

For larger sculptures, I like to either create niches in the home, or find the perfect pedestal. With a niche, you can also light the piece perfectly, so it captures all the attention right away!
