Color in the Kitchen

Let me start by saying I absolutely love a classic all-white kitchen. It’s timeless for a reason, and definitely one of the best kitchen designs if you plan to sell your home in the near future. But I’m also thrilled when I have a client who’s willing to step out of the box and experiment with color in the kitchen! I know that idea can be a little scary for some, so here are some great tips for how to use color in this room.

Tell a Neutral Story

You can always start with a hint of color, rather than a bold splash. The sand tones in the kitchen I designed above offer a warm look that’s all-embracing. It’s a great first step into a color palette and offers a lovely alternative to the all-white look.

Give a Hint

Another great first step toward bold color is to try just a hint of your favorite color in a small place, like on an island. If you choose a color that you love, it will be easier for you to make that leap. And putting it on the island only is a great way to test the waters because it’s in a small space.

Paint Makes It Easy

If you’re ready to use a bolder color, remember that paint is cheap. Try a stunning color on your cabinetry - if you don’t like it you can repaint it very easily. Don’t take that step with tile unless you’re REALLY sure you love it. Tile takes much more effort and money to change!

Double Down

If you want to embrace even more color in your kitchen, try using bold splashes in two or more areas of the kitchen. In the Houston home above, I used a cadet blue on the island and on a custom range hood. (Yes, it’s the same color, even though the lighting makes it look different!) My client loves this gorgeous blue.

Find Inspiration

If you’re still unsure about what color to introduce into your kitchen, find inspiration in your surroundings. Colors from nature area always a great bet, like the stunning green in my Telluride project above. It really brings the outdoors inside.

Try these ideas for color in your kitchen! And tell me which colors you would like to see in a kitchen, too!

Warmly,
