This post in my Month of Love celebration is about one of my true loves and inspirations - modern art. I love using modern abstracts to create focal points in my work, like the project below where I used a large, colorful, exploding abstract as a focal point on one wall, and then used a series of 3 black-and-white calligraphic-inspired prints as a counter-point. I love the movement and spirit they bring to the room.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about using art on a bigger scale, like the abstract wall murals/wall drawings pioneered by celebrated modern artists Henri Matisse and Sol Le Witt, amongst others.

These works have so inspired me that in my own home renovation I’ve commissioned several modern abstracts to be painted on my walls. They aren’t wallpaper, but true modern works of art, painted directly on my walls.

In my guest bath, I commissioned an abstract that wraps the room. Inspired by Alexander Calder, and maybe a little touch of the 1980s, I had Luxe Fine Finishes use a palette of saffrons and grays to update the abstract pattern for the 21st century.

In my master suite, the focal wall was painted with an abstract pattern that has the flow and movement of a Sol LeWitt wall drawing, but is also reminiscent of nature and the twisting branches of Houston’s native oak trees. This was commissioned to be painted in soothing grays to complement the furnishings I’ve designed and selected for our master retreat. I can’t wait to share the finished project with you!

In my powder room, I also commissioned a unique, striated, watercolor wall mural to envelope the walls of the room. Living with rooms that are actual works of art is so exciting to me, I can’t wait to move back in! It’s going to be like living in the galleries of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, albeit on a slightly more modest scale.
