It’s Showtime in High Point, NC, which is the name of the largest decorative fabric show in the U.S. This show underscores the endless options available when it comes to fabric. While it can be daunting, fabric selection is an extremely important aspect of interior design — and always where I begin.
A certain amount of creative “play” is part of developing the best look — with fabrics being one of one of the main elements to consider. Whether on a sofa or throw pillows or draperies, fabrics offer a splash of color and mood-setting texture to a space. My First-Class Fabric pinboard has all kinds of ideas that I use to inspire my work, like these:
As I gather different fabrics, I study the combination of scale, pattern, and color and how they work together to set the right tone for a space. Florals, of course, are huge right now. But I’m equally inspired by bold stripes. From one pattern to the next, fabrics seem to have their own individual personalities and stories.
Material also is an important consideration. Whether it’s cotton, velvet, silk, linen, or jute, texture is key to the best fabrics. I can’t wait to see the new trends and looks coming from Showtime this week!
