When people think of Southern design, they often think of traditional farmhouses, large antebellum homes, or Charleston brick homes with tons of wrought iron. While we like to remember our heritage and we thrive on tradition, there is also a modern side to us that most people don’t associate with Southern design.
For example, Austin, Texas, is a Southern town with a strong arts community, and a great location for a modern home like this, with its use of color, texture and contemporary furnishings.
This modern pool and guesthouse by Phillip Babb Architects is an addition to a modern home from 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia. The use of wood against the dark tile and light colors on the furnishings make this home as modern as Atlanta is Southern.
One of my favorite design styles incorporates modern art with traditional interiors – it’s the perfect combination.
We Southerners are still very much steeped in tradition but we can be just as avant garde and boundary-pushing in design as any other part of the country. To see more fabulous modern designs in the South, visit my Pinterest board here.
